Posing the tough questions that the community wants and needs answers to

After our first Animate the Race community forum, I realized that electing the right leadership to the school board this November is going to be a key factor in turning around the district and improving outcomes for students.

How on earth can we collectively help improve the education—and overall learning experience students are receiving—from the Minneapolis Public school system?

The Minneapolis Board of Education is a policy-making body responsible for selecting the superintendent and overseeing the district’s budget, curriculum, personnel and facilities. As a fellow for Animate the Race, I have an opportunity to sit with candidates seeking reelection, and those looking to fill open seats.

After our first Animate the Race community forum, I realized that electing the right leadership to the school board this November is going to be a key factor in turning around the district and improving outcomes for students.

As a product of the Minneapolis public school system myself, I intend to draw on my own experience—as a student, parent, and former staff member of the MPS district—posing tough questions that the community wants and needs answers to. My hope is to find a clear vision from each candidate: on how they plan to be innovative, daring, and passionate about redirecting the future of the MPS school system as a potential member of MPS Board of Education.
